Understanding the game of roulette including its various betting options and roulette vocab or terms is an important part of the game.
- A significant part of playing the game of roulette is by learning how to play the game. In order to help players to understand the various expressions used in the roulette game, this article presents a glossary of some of the relevant terms.
American roulette: This is a version of the roulette game that contains both a single zero and a double zero on its layout.
- Black bet: This is a wager predicting that the next roll will fall on a black section.
- Column bet: This is wager placed on one out of the three columns on the roulette layout.
- Corner bet: This refers to a wager placed on four numbers on the roulette layout.
- En prison rule: When playing by such a rule, should the ball land on a zero in the case of an outside bet, the player can decide whether to surrender half the wager or to leave the bet amount 'en prison' for the following turn of the roulette wheel. This rule is also referred to as the surrender rule and is often found in versions of European roulette.
- European roulette: The European roulette layout consists of numbers from 1to 36 and a single zero section.
- Five number bet: This is quite a common betting option at American roulette. In this bet, wagers are placed at the same time on zero, double zero, one, two and three.
- High bet: This is a wager placed on any of the numbers from nineteen to thirty-six inclusive.
- House edge: This term relates to the advantage held by the casino for making profit out of the particular game.
- Inside bet: This wager is placed on the inside number part of the roulette layout.
- La partage rule: This rule works in a similar theory to the en prison rule. In this rule however, the player may choose to lose half the bet and there is no option for leaving the wager for the following spin.
- Low bet: This is a wager placed on any of the numbers between one and eight inclusive.
- Outside bet: This is a bet placed on the outside section of the layout, including wagers according to color, section odds and evens and high and low numbers.
- Red bet: This is a wager predicting that the next roll will fall on a red section.
- Roulette strategy: This is a method used in order to improve a player's odds of winning the game.
- Roulette system: This relates to a system that is designed to help to beat the roulette wheel or at least to reduce the advantage held by the casino.
- Straight bet: This is a wager placed on one single number.
- Voisins du zero: This refers to a wager placed on a set of numbers that are located close to the zero on the roulette layout. This is a French expression and the option may often be found in European casinos.
