Baccarat Glossary |
- Card Values – The values assigned to individual cards. The cards from aces to nines have their face value and the other cards have zero value.
- Hand Value – The value of the hand obtained by adding the card values and dropping the tens digit.
- Baccarat – The hand that has given the game its name. It has value of 0 and is the worst hand.
- Le Grande – A hand with the value of 9, which is the best hand in baccarat.
- Petite – A hand with the value of 8.
- Natural – A hand with a value of 8 or 9. No further cards are dealt if the player gets a natural.
- Croupier – The dealer in baccarat.
- Ladderman – The casino employee who supervises the baccarat table.
- Caller – The casino employee who conducts the game.
- Muck – The eight deck set of cards used in most variants of baccarat.
- Discard Tray – A tray in which the used cards are placed.
- Palette – A wooden tool used for moving cards across the table.
- Shoe – A wooden box from which the cards are dealt.
- Coup – A round of baccarat.
- Table de Banque Card – A card provided to players on which they log the progression of the winnings.
- Burn Card – The top card removed from the deck after each shuffle and placed in the discard tray.
- Down Cards – Cards that are dealt face down.
- Upcard – A card that is dealt face up.
- Banco – A term called by a player who wants to match the bank.
- Carte – A term called by the player when he wants another card.
- Flat Bettor – A player who wagers the same amount throughout the game.
- High Roller – A player who places wagers of large amounts
- Baccarat en Banque – A European variant of baccarat in which the casino acts as the bank and there are two player positions.
- Chemin-de-fer – A European variant of baccarat in which one player acts as the bank. It translates as “rail road”.
- Punto Banco – An American variant of baccarat also known as Nevada style baccarat.
- Mini-baccarat – A variant of Punto Banco played on a smaller table.
- Baccarat a Tout Va – A variant of baccarat in which there are no limits on maximum bets. It translates as “anything goes”.
- Player Rules – The rules that govern whether or not the player should draw the third card.
- Banker Rules – The rules that govern whether or not the banker should draw the third card.
- Standoff – A tie between the banker and the player.
- Banker Bet – A wager that wins if the banker wins the hand.
- Player Bet – A bet that wins if the player wins the hand.
- Tie Bet – A wager that wins if there is a standoff.
- House Edge – The advantage the casino has over the player. Baccarat has one of the lowest house edges in casino games.
- Vigorish – Commission charged in those variants of baccarat in which the casino is not the bank.
