Blackjack Glossary |
- Card Values – The values of individual cards. Cards from twos to nines have their face values. Tens, jacks, queens and kings have a card value of 10. The ace can have a card value of 1 or 11 depending on the situation.
- Hand Values – The value of the hand obtained by adding the individual card values.
- Blackjack – A dealt two card hand that has any ace and any of the following cards – ten, jack, queen and king. The value of this hand is 21.
- Push – A tie when both the dealer and the player have the same total, which is 21 or less.
- Bust – When the hand value of the dealer or the player exceeds 21 on taking an additional card.
- Soft Total – The value of a hand that has an ace, which can take the value of 11 without busting.
- Hard Total – The value of a hand that does not have an ace or it has an ace that cannot take the value of 11 without busting.
- Dealer’s Rules – The prescribed rules with which the dealer has to play his hand.
- Hitting – An option given to the player by which he asks to draw another card.
- Standing – An option given to the player in which he does not draw an additional card.
- Doubling Down – An option given to the player in which he can double his initial wager after seeing his dealt cards. However if the player exercises this option he has to take one and only one additional card.
- Splitting Pairs – An option given to the player when his two dealt cards are of identical rank. The player can split the hand into two independent hands by placing an equivalent wager.
- Surrender – An option given to the player to give up his dealt hand after the dealer determines that he does not have a blackjack. The player exercising this option will lose half his wager.
- Insurance – An option given to the player when the dealer’s upcard is an ace. The player can bet up to half his wager that the dealer has a blackjack. If this bet wins then it is paid at 2 to 1. This bet is independent of the player’s original wager.
- Upcard – The card of the dealer that is dealt face up.
- Hole card – The card of the dealer that is dealt face down.
- Shoe – The device from which cards are dealt at the blackjack table.
- Discard tray – The device into which the used cards are placed.
- No Hole Card Rule – A rule prevalent in most casinos outside the United States under which the dealer is not dealt a hole card. The dealer takes his second card only after all players have completed their play.
- Basic Strategy – The optimal strategy that gives the player the best chance of winning according to mathematical probabilities.
- Strategy Tables – Tables that outline optimal basic strategy. The tables have the dealer’s upcard in the columns and the player’s hand values in the rows and indicate the player’s optimal move for each condition.
